Many non-Arabs want to read Arabic, and we witness growing numbers of non-Arabs want to read Quran in Arabic. But sometimes, reading Arabic for non-Arabis feels very difficult for them. Where do I start? How can I learn all those Arabic letters and sounds?

This is why we made this page. We will talk about learning to read Arabic, including learning to read the Quran in arabic.

Let’s read Arabic!

What is Learning to Read in Arabic?

Arabic reading is about recognizing the Arabic letters (called huruf حروف) and understanding how they sound. Each Arabic letter can change its sound a little depending on the vowels (called harakat حركات) and other marks.

Learning to read in Arabic also involves understanding how letters connect to form words and how words come together to form sentences. With practice, you will be able to read any Arabic text, from simple sentences to the beautiful verses of the Quran.

Defining the “Arabic Reading Course”

An “Arabic Reading Course” is a special program to learn how to read Arabic text. Some Arabic reading courses even focus on learning to read the Quran. The Arabic reading course teaches you:

  • Reading Arabic Alphabet ( al-abjadiyya al-arabiyya الأبجدية العربية ): You learn all 28 Arabic letters and how they look in different parts of a word (beginning, middle, end).
  • Reading with Arabic Vowels and Pronunciation: You learn how to say each letter correctly with the harakat (vowel marks). For example, how “دَ” (da) is different from “دِ” (di) and “دُ” (du).
  • Reading Arabic Connecting Letters: You learn how letters connect to each other to make words. For example, how “ك” (kaf), “ت” (ta), and “ب” (ba) connect to make the word “كَتَبَ” (kataba), which means “he wrote.”
  • Reading Arabic Words and Sentences: You practice reading simple Arabic words and then move on to Arabic sentences.
  • Tajweed (تجويد) If You Want to Focus on Reading the Quran: If the course focuses on the Quran, you will also learn tajweed. Tajweed is the special way of reading the Quran with correct pronunciation and rhythm.

Kalima Center’s Arabic Reading Curriculum for Non-Native Beginners

Kalima center’s Arabic reading course curriculum for non-native beginners will follow a clear plan and systematic steps to build a solid foundation. Here is what you can expect:

1. Our Reading Curriculum Begins With the Arabic Alphabet (الحروف)

We start with the 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet. In our classes, we emphsize the importance of understanding that every Arabic letter is made up of three main aspects: name, sound, and shape.

  1. Name: The name of each Arabic letter is how you refer to it when saying the alphabet. For instance, the first letter “أ” is called “Alif.”
  2. Shape: Each letter in the Arabic alphabet can appear in different forms depending on its position in the word.
  3. Sound: The sound of each letter can change depending on the diacritical marks (harakat) placed above or below it. .

2. Then, We’ll Practice Reading with Short Vowels (الحركات)

We will learn the three short vowels (Harakāt): fatha (ـَ), damma (ـُ), and kasra (ـِ). We will practice reading words with these vowels. We will also learn about sukun (ـْ), which indicates the absence of a vowel.

3. Next, our Reading Curriculum Covers Long Vowels (حروف المد)

We will learn the three long vowels: alif (ا), waw (و), and ya’ (ي). These letters lengthen the sound of the preceding short vowel. For example:

  1. بَاب (baab) – “Door” (long ‘a’ sound)
  2. كُوب (kuub) – “Cup” (long ‘u’ sound)
  3. فِيل (fiil) – “Elephant” (long ‘i’ sound)

4. Then, We’ll Focus on Reading Simple Words and Sentences

We will start reading simple words and sentences, using the letters and vowels we have learned. We will focus on correct pronunciation and fluency.

5. Our Reading Program then Introduces Basic Grammar for Reading

We will introduce some basic grammar rules that are essential for reading, such as definite and indefinite articles, and simple verb conjugations.

6. Our Reading Methodology Progresses to Reading Practice

We will read short texts, stories, and verses from the Quran, depending on your goals. We will focus on comprehension and understanding the meaning of what we read.

For example, Kalimah uses interactive exercises to help learners practice their Arabic reading comprehension. Here’s an interactive exercise based on the following image of our curriculum in Online Arabic Reading Courses For Adults:
