Qiyam Prayer Meaning and its Time

Qiyam Al Layl Prayer And Tahajud

Qiyam al-Layl, also known as the “night prayer,” is a voluntary act of worship in Islam that involves spending part of the night in prayer, supplication, and remembrance of Allah. It is a deeply spiritual practice that holds immense significance in the life of a Muslim. This article provides a comprehensive guide to Qiyam al-Layl, including its definition, timing, virtues, how to perform it, and its benefits.

Qiyam al-Layl Meaning

Qiyam al-Layl refers to spending the night, or a portion of it, in prayer and other acts of worship. In Islamic terms, it specifically means performing voluntary prayers at night, starting after the `Isha prayer and lasting until the second Fajr (the dawn prayer). This can be done before or after sleeping. It is a confirmed Sunnah (practice of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) and is highly encouraged for both men and women.

When Is Qiyam al-Layl?

The time for Qiyam al-Layl begins after the `Isha prayer and extends until the Fajr prayer. While it can be performed at any time during the night, the last third of the night is considered the most virtuous time. This is because Allah descends to the lowest heaven during this time, answering supplications and forgiving sins. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“Our Lord descends to the lowest heaven during the last third of the night, asking: ‘Who is calling upon Me that I may answer him? Who is asking of Me that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness that I may forgive him?'” (Sahih Bukhari and Muslim)
